Chanhassen Dinner Theater

People love dinner theater, the idea of enjoying a meal while seeing a show has been around since the first dinner theater opened in 1962.  Only six years after that first, Chanhassen dinner theater opened for its first show and its still going strong.  2008 is the 40th anniversary of this popular Minnesota entertainment spot.  A lot of top quality shows play there each year.

There are multiple spaces in the theater.  There are many dining and show spaces throughout the 90,000 sq. ft. complex.  The Main Dinner Theater is the largest theater space in Chanhassen.  541 guests can fit into this room.  Meals are served to these people while they enjoy the show.  The complex includes other theater rooms such as the Playhouse Theater and Fireside Theater.  Similar to a stadium luxury box, the Director’s Room overlooks the Main Dinner Theater .  People can enjoy private meals while watching the play.  Weddings are frequently held in the many dining facilities, and people love to visit the lounge and pub.

The Playhouse Theater has its own special story.  In 1971 a play called “I Do! I Do!” opened in that room.  The run lasted all the way to 1993.  To top off 22 years of entertaining there, the play boasted the same cast from opening day to the last curtain call.  125 patrons at a time, over 700,000 people made Chanhassen famous by seeing that play there.

Chanhassen presented some of the most popular plays over the years.  From May of 2003 to June of 2004 Sound of Music played a repeat performance there.  My Fair Lady has played there, Guys and Dolls, The Music Man, Camelot, Annie Get Your Gun and a host of others.  These all played in the main theater.  Many more have also been shown in the smaller rooms, such as On Golden Pond and Dial M For Murder.  Every size and level of show plays at Chanhassen.  Over time there’s been something for everyone, which may explain why the theater remains a popular attraction in the Twin Cities.
