<p>A married couple, Herbert and Carolyn Bloomberg, looked at a corn field and imagined a 90,000 square foot theatre facility.  The Old Log Theater had contracted them to build it&#8217;s new facility.  Their own complex soon followed, built about 30 minutes from downtown.  To add to the risk their vision included a restaurant.  People laughed at the silly notion of a theatre complex too far from the city built on top of a restaurant, a hard enough endeavor in itself.</p>

<p>Then in October of 1968 the theatre started business.  Fittingly, &#8216;How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying&#8217; was the inaugural production .  Then &#8216;the Fantasticks&#8217; came to town.  Now for a pun.  The curtains were now open on what would become the largest professional dinner theater in the United States.  It can also boast being the largest privately owned restaurant in Minnesota.  Take that, nay sayers.</p>
<p>On February 18, 1971 a production of &#8216;I Do! I Do!&#8217; opened in the Playhouse, a smaller theatre space in the Chanhassen facility .  It ran a staggering 21 years.  Even more amazing was that the same cast stayed with the show the whole time.  How&#8217;s that for job security?  Chanhassen became known all over America for that show.  It ended in November of 1992, but after &#8216;I Do Love the Holidays&#8217; took over for a few months, &#8216;I Do! I Do!&#8217; returned for a short run from late January to early December of 1993.  For two years following that &#8216;Stevie Ray&#8217;s Comedy Troupe&#8217; entertained audiences.  That pretty good too</p>
<p>Both &#8216;Stevie Ray&#8217;s Comedy Troupe&#8217; and &#8216;I Do! I Do!&#8217; later returned to Chanhassen, but in a different room.  The Courtyard, now called the Club, hosted each of the plays in 1995.  Today the Club is put to use for weddings and business gatherings.  Camelot, My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music and many other plays have appeared at Chanhassen .  There are too many to list here.  Go to the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre web site,  http://www.chanhassentheatres.com, for the complete list.</p>

<p>How about this recipe for a delicious appetizer?  Move the pumpkin from dessert to the start of the meal as a savory Pumpkin soup.  Add butter and oil to a pan over medium heat. Add three sliced leeks (only the white) and saute until the leeks are soft. Add 15 ounces of pumpkin puree, a pinch of cloves, one tablespoon of ground cinnamon, one teaspoon of ground ginger, and a pinch of salt.  After that&#8217;s all mixed, add 32 ounces of vegetable broth. Stir in one quarter cup of brown sugar.  Use low heat to simmer it for 10 minutes. If desired pour a tsp or so of cream or half and half into the bowl before adding soup and a dash of cinnamon.  Mmmm boy that&#8217;s delicious.</p>
<p>Fried turkey is also good.  You may think it&#8217;s greasy but it isn&#8217;t.  The oil can&#8217;t penetrate the skin after the hot oil sears it.  For this task a big oil pot and propane burner are used.  Turkey fryers can be found in stores like Walmart.  Check the meat with a meat thermometer and the oil temperature with an oil thermometer.  Hot oil may spatter so do this in an open outdoor space.  Get that oil hot, up to 350F.  Cook it for 3 minutes per pound, until the breast is 170F.  Dressing isn&#8217;t fried inside the turkey, but spices can be injected into it.</p>
<p>Try hazelnut pumpkin soup or a butternut squash stuffing.  Other appetizer possibilities also exist.  Give cheese wrapped asparagus a try.  Both sliced and spread cheese go into this one.  Try slices of swiss with a blue cheese spread.  Spread the soft cheese on the slices, wrap it around a few asparagus spears, then cook in a 230 degree C oven for about 15 minutes, or until the asparagus is soft.  Sure wrapping cheese around asparagus turns a pretty healthy food into something a little more fattening.  But Thanksgiving isn&#8217;t a time for a diet.  Live a little!</p>
