Mystery dinner theatre is only one type of mystery theatre.  Entire weekends are dedicated to similar mysteries.  Sometimes the audience watches and speaks with actors who resolve the whole case, other times the audience must solve the puzzle.  People enjoy playing detective and these types of shows are becoming more common.

This could be confused with a person getting angry over a bad meal.  It’s not really mystery theatre just because the meat is a mystery and the customer is being theatric.  It is mystery theatre if the person suddenly falls over dead from a poison dart in his back.

This is even becoming popular for younger children.  For very young ages the mystery might involve theft rather than murder, but the process is still the same.  The actors play out a scenario then mingle with the people who ask questions and get involved.  One of the patrons may be in on the secret.  Someone is part of the mystery, the guests don’t know who to trust.  The plot thickens.

When the shows are put on as a birthday party everyone but the birthday boy is part of the mystery.  Only the guest of honor is in the dark.  Total secrecy is required, as even one loud mouthed person can spoil the entire situation.  He won’t be very popular for ruining everyone’s fun.
